Discover in the Little Venice the village atmosphere that is typical of traditional Alsace. Be charmed by the sight of the half-timbered houses, adjoined by a stream, the Lauch.
The first stop in the tour of the Little Venice of Colmar is the Quai de la Poissonnerie (Fishing Quay), which is accessible by a small bridge that crosses Rue des Tanneurs. Fishermen used to sell fresh fish here that had been caught in Colmar’s waters. The brightly coloured, little half-timbered houses belonged to the members of the powerful fishing corporation.
The flat-bottomed boats that once cruised along the Lauch allowed market gardeners to display their fruits and vegetables. Today, the small gondolier boats pay homage to this long-forgotten activity, giving Colmar a Venetian feel. You can board boat tours of the Little Venice district from underneath the Saint-Pierre Bridge. The boat tour is a wonderful opportunity to discover the string of beautifully restored houses dating from 1350 to 1609.
The stunning view of the district from the Saint-Pierre Bridge, to the far south of Little Venice, is one of the most photographed views of Colmar. Busloads of tourists stop here to allow visitors to admire the view of the river reflecting the old half-timbered houses.
The Little Venice
One of the most popular places in Colmar is the romantic Petite Venise district (Little Venice). The beautiful half-timbered houses and colourful walls on the Poissonnerie quayside and the small flower-covered bridges spanning the Lauch river add to the charm of the place. A boat tour on the canal is also a lovely way to discover the pretty banks of the Petite Venise.

History, figures, heritage
For Georges Duhamel (as he wrote in 1931), Colmar was the "most beautiful town in the world". It has also often been said that it is the most Alsatian town in Alsace! Without going over the top with superlatives, Colmar undoubtedly remains an exceptional town due to the wealth and variety of its historical and architectural heritage.
The capital of central Alsace, situated near Germany and Switzerland between the Vosges and the Rhine, Strasbourg and Mulhouse, the town offers visitors an exciting glimpse of 1000 years of European history.
Besides, with its 67,000 inhabitants, Colmar retains a 'country town' atmosphere which contributes so much to its charm. Wonderfully preserved from the ravages of time, its homogenous historical centre is classed as a 'protected area' and has benefited from careful restoration and ongoing improvements for more than 20 years.
